Rapid Infrastructure Support at Kansas City International Airport (MCI)
During the major renovation phase at Kansas City International Airport (MCI), a critical need arose for a temporary solution to maintain smooth airline operations. Southwest Airlines required an on-site, interim baggage handling facility to sustain their services while the main terminal underwent construction.
The Sprung Solution: Fast, Flexible Baggage Facility
Having a history of successful collaboration on challenging timelines across the U.S., Southwest Airlines confidently turned to Sprung Structures to deliver a fast, flexible, and cost-effective building solution.
Sprung designed and delivered a fully insulated, 90’ x 130’ temporary baggage facility. The key challenge lay in integrating this temporary structure with the airport’s existing conventional terminal and maintaining airport ground traffic flow.
Innovative Integration and Design
Sprung engineered the temporary facility to seamlessly accommodate the essential conveyor system that needed to extend from the permanent terminal building into the new structure. To solve the complex intersection of baggage flow and ground traffic, the design incorporated:
A customized large opening (measuring 19’ wide by 7’6” long) engineered into the structure.
This opening allowed the protected conveyor system to run overhead while ensuring baggage tug traffic could move safely and efficiently underneath.
This project highlights the ability of our partners, like Sprung, to provide innovative, rapid-deployment solutions that solve complex logistical challenges in dynamic airport environments.
